The Shifting Guest Landscape
The line between hotel expectations and vacation rental expectations has blurred significantly. Guests expect hotel-level cleanliness and amenities combined with the space and character that hotels cannot provide.
Where Hotels Set the Standard
Hotels excel at consistency, cleanliness, and essential amenities. Quality bedding, plush towels, reliable hot water, and well-lit bathrooms are no longer differentiators for vacation rentals. They are requirements.
Where Vacation Rentals Win
Vacation rentals have structural advantages in design flexibility, space, kitchen access, outdoor areas, and unique experiences. These advantages drive guests to choose rentals over hotels.
Bridging the Quality Gap
Where rentals most often fall short: consistent bathroom supplies, professional cleaning, reliable WiFi, clear check-in instructions, and responsive communication.
Design Strategies From Hotels
Adopt hotel practices: white bedding, matching bathroom accessories, professional cleaning products, labeled instructions, and a guest directory. These cost virtually nothing to implement.
